Viña del Mar, May 3, 2019.- In order to highlight Chile’s cultural heritage and showcase it to the 21 APEC member economies, the region of Valparaíso was chosen as the location for the Second Senior Officials’ Meeting and Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Trade, which will take place between May 2 and 18.
In her opening remarks, Acting Foreign Affairs Minister Carolina Valdivia emphasized the importance of holding these types of meetings and discussions in regions outside of Santiago. “The key objective we have set ourselves for this year is to connect people with development, sharing a transnational reality that crosses borders and enables us to develop the tools to achieve comprehensive, sustainable and inclusive growth,” she explained.
Carolina Valdivia underscored that Viña del Mar and Valparaíso are excellent locations for deepening and continuing the work being developed in the APEC meetings. It is hoped that in these cities outcomes will be achieved that will forge sustainable regional integration and enable Chile to continue with its policy of integration into the Asia-Pacific region.
The Regional Governor of Valparaíso, Jorge Martínez, added that he is delighted that activities like the Second Senior Officials’ Meeting and Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Trade are being held in this area: “Valparaíso is Chile’s most open region; it has the two principal ports, the main border, a logistics chain structure and a very strong international vocation.”
Over 60 activities will take place as part of the APEC meetings, including a wide-ranging citizen agenda. The following are among the topics to be addressed in the official meetings: broadening the dialogue on tourism, human development and topics related to sustainable growth and ocean conservation. This region will also be the location for the first meeting of the Policy Partnership on Women and the Economy (PPWE).
The Chilean Villages initiative will once again be set up in the host hotel, allowing 35 SMEs from the Valparaíso region to showcase their products to the over thousand delegates who will be coming to Viña del Mar. The APEC App Challenge will also take place, a challenge sponsored by Google with the support of The Asia Foundation, where young people from the APEC economies will develop a smartphone app with the goal of taking to products developed by women entrepreneurs to international markets.
