APEC lands in Puerto Varas with the Third Senior Officials Meeting and Related Meetings
Over the next two weeks, the Los Lagos Region will host, among other events, the High-Level Meeting on Health and the Economy, the Food Security 5th Ministerial Meeting and various Citizen APEC activities, which are designed to bring the forum closer to the public.
August 15, 2019. The APEC forum has taken over the city of Puerto Varas. Nearly 135 activities including group meetings, seminars, workshops and Citizen APEC will be held from August 15 to 30 in the Los Lagos Region in the context of the Third Senior Officials Meeting (SOM3).
Over the next few days, nearly 2,500 delegates and experts from APEC economies will discuss various topics ranging from food security and natural disasters to the digital economy, all with the city of Puerto Varas as a backdrop.
During the launch of this new series of meetings, APEC Chile 2019 SOM Chair Mathias Francke stated, “We are very excited to be here in Puerto Varas. We will have a record number of delegates compared to other SOM meetings that we have hosted in Chile, which reflects the enthusiasm for the sustainability agenda that we will develop here in Puerto Varas, as well as the region’s beauty. We are grateful to the Los Lagos Region, its officials and its people for all of their support and enthusiasm.”
For his part, the Los Lagos Regional Governor, Harry Jürgensen, stated, “We are not only seeking economic growth here. We are also seeking out solutions to aging, health and issues related to nature. This meeting is very important for Chile and the entire world. The Los Lagos Region is proud to have these activities here and this is a great opportunity for Puerto Varas to showcase our traditions, culture and projection to the world.”
On August 20 and 21, the Hotel Enjoy will host the High-Level Meeting on Health and the Economy, which will have as its slogan, “Healthy Economies in an Aging World” and will feature the participation of Chilean Health Minister Jaime Mañalich. The Food Security 5th Ministerial Meeting will take place on August 23 and 24 and will be led by Agriculture Minister Antonio Walker. The Senior Officials will meet for the third time on August 29 and 30 to prepare for the Leaders Meeting, to be held in November.
In addition to the official meetings, various activities that form part of Citizen APEC will be held, which invite the institutions and international experts that participate in various official Forum activities to share their knowledge with the public through workshops and presentations. There will be Citizen APEC activities in the cities of Puerto Montt, Ancud, Castro, Valdivia, Victoria, Santiago and Punta Arenas during SOM3.
