Automóviles híbridos conforman transporte oficial de APEC Chile 2019
A total of 619 vehicles will transport the leaders, ministers and senior officials of the 21 economies that comprise the largest economic forum in the Asia-Pacific region over the course of APEC Chile 2019.
The official unveiling of the fleet of hybrid and conventional Hyundai vehicles that will transport the leaders, ministers and senior officials of the 21 APEC economies during this year's activities was held at Plaza de la Constitución and was attended by Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Carolina Valdivia.
Accompanying the undersecretary were APEC Chile 2019 Presidential Delegate Félix de Vicente; General Guillermo Quiroz of the Carabineros police force, also the Chief of the APEC 2019 Special Security Detail; APEC 2019 SOM Chair Mathias Francke; and Ricardo Lessmann, the President & CEO of Automotores Gildemeister, the company that represents Hyundai in Chile.
A total of 619 vehicles has been provided, including the clean technology Ionic HEB and Sonata HEB hybrid models, conventional Santa Fe and New H1 models and Hyundai buses, the latter loaned to APEC by Automotores Gildemeister.
"Organizing the APEC year provides a unique opportunity to showcase the cultural, social, geographic and culinary wealth of our economy to all APEC members," said Carolina Valdivia. She also noted that the government and Foreign Ministry are grateful to Automotores Gildemeister for its valuable contribution. This summit "is only possible with the support of all citizens and the joint work of the public and private sectors," she said.
Automotores Gildemeister President and CEO Ricardo Lessmann stated, “It is a great honor to participate once again as the official transportation provider for an event as important to the country as APEC 2019.”
Hyundai has participated similar events since 1996, when the company's vehicles were chosen as the official means of transport of the Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government. This was followed by meetings such as the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) in 2003; APEC 2004; the CELAC and EU-CELAC Summits in 2013; the visit of Pope Francis in 2018; and the last five presidential changes in command in Chile, accompanying Presidents Ricardo Lagos, Michelle Bachelet and Sebastián Piñera.
The vehicles will be chauffeured by cadets of the Carabineros de Chile police force so as not to infringe on the institution's daily work of protecting the country's citizens.
This is the first time that many hybrid cars have been included in such a fleet, thus providing cleaner technology that contributes to the care of the environment. The goal is to achieve greater energy efficiency through lower fuel consumption and a reduction in the emission of harmful gases.
Opting for this alternative form of transport follows the line of work of the APEC Chile 2019 Sustainable Growth priority, which includes the promotion of the use of new types of energy, among other initiatives.
