SOM Chair meets with representatives of APEC economies in Chile
Santiago, December 3, 2018. The Director for Multilateral Economic Affairs of Direcon and the SOM Chair (Chair of the Senior Officials' Meeting) for APEC Chile 2019, Mathias Francke, held a coordination meeting this morning with representatives from the Embassies / Offices of APEC member economies that are present in Chile. The meeting took place in the offices of Chile's Foreign Affairs Ministry.
The meeting was also attended by the Senior Official for Chile, Benjamín Salas, the Executive Secretary, Paulina Nazal, and the Director of Logistics, Fernando Barrera.
During the meeting, Mathias Francke provided details of the inauguration program and the initial activities that will be held in Chile. Paulina Nazal discussed Chile's priorities for the year, while Ambassador Barrera provided information on the main logistical aspects for receiving delegates from APEC member economies.
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is the foremost intergovernmental forum for promoting economic growth, technical and economic cooperation and facilitating and liberalizing trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region. Created in 1989, it comprises 21 member economies including Chile, which joined in 1994. Chile was the APEC host country in 2004, and will again host the forum in 2019. 2019 also marks APEC's 30th anniversary, and the 25th anniversary since Chile joined.
APEC represents 60% of global GDP and almost 40% of the world's population. The APEC region grew by 4.1% in 2017, up from the 2016 figure of 3.4%. 58% of investment in Chile originates from the APEC region, and around 70% of Chile's exports are shipped to APEC member economies.
