One month after the December launch in Chile:
Work of APEC Chile 2019 Office takes shape
SOM Chair Mathias Francke leads a team of over 30 professionals including diplomats from Australia and New Zealand.
Santiago, 9 January 2019 — The team, led by Mathias Francke, is making progress on the coordination and preparation of the First Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM1). Technical working groups and delegates will arrive in Santiago between 23 February and 7 March.
“APEC Chile 2019 will be a major milestone for Chile’s foreign policy during the administration of President Sebastián Piñera. As such, all of the resources necessary for successfully carrying out this process have been provided. We now have over 30 renowned experts working on content, logistics, production, communications and image, and management and finance, among others areas, to ensures the continuity, development and implementation of APEC 2019 in our country,” said Mathias Francke, the SOM Chair (Chairman of the APEC Senior Officials' Meeting APEC).
The APEC Chile 2019 Office, which comes under the General Directorate of International Economic Relations (Direcon) of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, is being directed full time by the Chair of the Senior Officials of APEC, Mathias Francke. Francke is an attorney and member of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Foreign Service with over 25 years of experience in trade and multilateral issues. Prior to becoming the SOM Chair, he served as Chile’s SOM and as the Director of Multilateral Economic Affairs at Direcon.
The APEC Chile 2019 Office is responsible for the contents and logistics related to organizing and executing the nearly 200 meetings that will take place over the course of 2019, culminating in the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, to be held 17 November 2019.
The Contents Department, which is staffed by Direcon career professionals, will manage the regular APEC calendar and will provide direct technical support to the SOM Chair and to the Senior Official for Chile, Benjamín Salas.
For its part, the Logistical Production Department, which successfully organized the first Senior Officials’ Meeting in December 2018, is currently organizing the February/March meetings.
The APEC Chile 2019 Office also has a Press and Communications Department, which works with the Direcon Communications Department; an Image Department; and a Management and Finance Department that is directly linked to Direcon’s Administrative Leadership.
